Well guys, our sids monitor went off this weekend, and it was no false alarm! James is fine, thanks to the monitor – but the event could very well have had a very sad ending.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs BabySense?
BabySense can be used with all babies from birth to age 1 year to help parents become aware of any breathing problems while baby sleeps.

What does BabySense do?
BabySense monitors the breathing movements of the baby and sounds a loud alarm if the breathing becomes slow or stops.

I have a sound or video baby monitor already. Why do I need BabySense ?
Monitoring sound or watching baby by camera does not provide a clear indication of the baby's breathing. BabySense provides a flashing green light as baby breaths, and sounds a loud alarm if breathing problems are detected. BabySense is a critical addition to any monitoring system parents are using to ensure baby is safe.

Do I need to connect anything to my baby?
NO - BabySense is completely NON-CONTACT and works entirely though the mattress.

Is BabySense safe to use?
YES - BabySense is battery operated and is not connected to any electricity outlet. It is completely safe to use.

Why Babysense?
Babysense was the first of the "new age" baby movement monitors. Developed and patented in Israel in 1992, BabySense has been on the international market since 1994, the most highly experienced baby monitor. All derivations which are available today on the market are a result of this breakthrough in development.
Babysense is the only home baby movement monitor to carry complete CE registration as a Medical Device. Our first commitment is to your baby’s safety, and we made the unit simple and safe to use at home while reliably used even in children’s hospital units world over.
Babysense II carries the same safety certifications, with a new attractive design, and sensor improvement.

Is it safe?
Breathing, movement or apnea monitors are NOT perfect. Babysense has a long record of use (since 1992) it is a registered baby safety device and most important it has a well proven record of reports from parents and hospitals worldwide. It has a very low rate of "false" alarms. And most important – as written in an interview with a Czech pediatrician of the Slovac SIDS Foundation, MUDr. M. Kuchta CSc:

"IT IS NOT TO BE IGNORED THAT ALL OF THE BABIES IN OUR PROGRAM [MONITORED BY BABYSENSE] ARE ALIVE." (Diet’a 1:1998)
The device is non-invasive, omits no waves, electric current or side effects.

Why two Sensor Pads?
Babysense is sold with two large sensor pads
The device adapts to your baby’s weight and movement as she/he grows.
For newborn babies, in bassinette or full sized crib, one sensor pad under the mattress where the baby sleeps gives ultimate sensitivity.
For babies over 3 months old, who crawl in bed, Babysense does not restrict movement. The connector cable enables both sensors to be attached, for complete coverage of the sleeping area!

How does Babysense work?
Babysense’ sensor pads register the movement of your baby’s body weight and the algorithms of the control unit’s microprocessor is designed to recognize the rhythm/rate of this movement, which represents each breath baby takes!
Babysense is not just another movement monitor, because it has parameters that define breathing rate that is too slow (under 10 breaths per minute) or too fast (over 90 breaths per minute) or no breathing/movement for 20 seconds.

Why is Babysense only operated on batteries?
Baby’s safety comes first – Babysense is not connected to the power mains, and all cords are passive. The control unit hangs on baby’s crib side or wall, away from reach at all times, with no need to be close to electric socket. Babysense is versatile, can be taken anywhere without restriction of place or voltage.

What about false alarms?
False alarms cannot be completely avoided by any monitor. Some alarms may in fact be "true" alarms in cases where the alarm actually stimulates baby into regaining his breath on his own! The important thing is to check that baby is O.K. In Babysense we have seen that most false alarms are caused by loose wires or improper installment, and checking the installation (or advice of you local distributor) may solve the problem. Babysense has been tested and proven to have a very low rate (under 1% ) of false alarms.

Why does Babysense not have a feature of adjustable sensitivity?
We believe that simple and good is best. Sometimes adjusting the sensitivity supposedly to reduce unidentified or "false" alarms may increase the chance of missing a "true" alarm. Babysense has proven itself over the years with this guideline.

Is there a restriction of mattress thickness?
Babysense is designed to work optimally with rubber mattresses, which are the usual standard for baby cribs. In rubber or spring mattresses no limit has been observed.
Difficulty may arise using straw stuffed mattresses, thickness limited to under 10 cm.

Can we use Babysense with a box spring crib? Net bottomed bassinette?
Babysense can be used with most bed types, However UNDER the sensor pad/s a hard flat surface (plywood board), must be placed for correct pressure!

Should baby lay directly on the pads?
Babysense sensor pads are placed under the mattress, never coming into contact with baby. For optimum sensitivity – small baby’s torso should be placed over area of pad.

Can we travel with Babysense?
Absolutely, since the unit is activated on batteries only, there is no question of voltage or power supply. It is important to do a routine testing of the device in a new setup to avoid disturbance (set up the unit in bed, without baby. Turn on Babysense, do not touch bed. Alarm should sound within less than 20 seconds. If green light flashes, something is causing rhythmic movement of the bed (fan? window? mobile? your hand?) find and remove it and check again. Made sure you can hear the alarm from wherever you may be!

Until what age is Babysense Respiratory monitor recommended?
1) Babysense recognizes the defined rate of breathing for infants (over 10 under 90 breaths per minute). This is average breathing rate for an infant, from birth until 12-18 months. Between the age of 12-18 months, breathing rate slows, this slower rate may cause alarms. For this reason Babysense is recommended until 1 year of age.
2) By definition and statistics, SIDS (Crib Death) is rare beyond one year of age.

Is BabySense also a sound or video monitor?
NO - BabySense is focused on monitoring breathing movement only. There are many other products on the market that are sound or video monitors, each with its own feature set. This enables parents to choose the sound monitor most suitable for their range, budget and environment irrespective of the BabySense use.

How does BabySense compare with other Baby Monitors on the market?
BabySense is the original monitor with a track record of over 10 years and over 400,000 babies. BabySense has European approval as a medical device and is even used in hospitals and recommended by doctors. It is highly accurate and ensures minimum false alarms and maximum parental confidence.

Can you explain the difference in price between BabySense and other baby monitors available?
YES - BabySense is designed to be highly accurate. As such, no compromise has been made with any components. For example, BabySense is always shipped with two sensor pads to ensure complete coverage. In our judgment, with products such as BabySense, accuracy is more important than price.

Can Babysense be used again?
Babysense can be stored in a dry place, preferably packed in its original box, without batteries and without external pressure on the sensor pads, and used again when the time comes for the next baby…
